Make AI Tell You the Truth (Not What You Want to Hear)

Free guide by AI with Zana · Works in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini · 8-minute read

Ever noticed AI thinks all your ideas are great? That's no accident. Chat assistants are trained to be helpful and pleasant, and "pleasant" easily slides into agreeing with you. That's fine for a recipe. It's dangerous when you're deciding whether to quit your job, launch a product or spend money on ads.

This guide gives you four prompts that make AI push back, plus a permanent setting so you don't have to remember them.

Why AI flatters you

  • You lead the witness. "Isn't this a great idea?" practically begs for a yes.
  • It mirrors your energy. Excited message in, excited answer out.
  • It avoids conflict. Without permission to criticise, it softens everything.

The fix is to give it permission and give it a job that requires disagreement.

Prompt 1: The honest friend

Use it when you want feedback on anything: a caption, a sales page, a plan.

Be the brutally honest friend who actually wants me to succeed.
Here's my [idea / draft / plan]: [paste]

1. What's the weakest part? Be specific.
2. What would a skeptical customer think in the first 5 seconds?
3. What would you cut completely?
Don't soften it. Don't start with compliments.

Prompt 2: Argue the other side

Use it when you've already made up your mind (that's exactly when you need it most).

I'm leaning towards [decision]. Build the strongest possible case
AGAINST it, as if you were paid to change my mind.
Then tell me which of your arguments I'd be foolish to ignore.

Prompt 3: The pre-mortem

Use it before any launch, investment or big commitment.

Imagine it's 6 months from now and [my plan] failed badly.
Write the 5 most likely reasons it failed, ranked by probability.
For each one, give me one cheap way to test for it this week.

Prompt 4: Hold your ground

AI often flips its answer the moment you push back, even when it was right. Stop that:

If I disagree with you, don't change your answer just to please me.
Only change it if I give you new information or a better argument,
and tell me which one it was.

Make it permanent

Most AI apps let you save instructions that apply to every chat: look for Custom Instructions, Personalisation or Project instructions in settings. Paste this in once:

Be direct and honest with me. If my idea has a weak spot, say it
clearly before anything positive. Don't agree just to be agreeable.
When I push back, keep your position unless I give you a real reason
to change it. I prefer useful truth over comfortable answers.

A warning worth remembering

An honest AI is still not always a right AI. Use its criticism as a list of things to check, not a verdict. The goal is to see your blind spots before the market shows them to you.
